one popular theory about this particular anomaly is that they are impact craters. either a large astral body exploded near earth or a large astral body collided with the asteroid belt sending more asteroids to earth

The Bays were formed by the retreat of tsunami waters. A landslide off the east coast caused an enormous wave some 1,000ft tall to wash inland as far as Winston-Salem NC. When it retreated it carved these holes.

These are probably sinkholes left from an evacuated aquifer.
